CCE Indonesia is a non-profit organization involved in civic education program. A CCE Indonesia aim is to support the development of the civic education’s life that has responsibility from every citizen. In the year 2002, CCEI was built as a representative office of the Center for Civic Education (CCE) Calabasas, U.S. In December 2007, CCE Indonesia changed its form into a foundation named Yayasan Pusat Pendidikan Kewarganegaraan Indonesia (YPPKI) or the Center for Civic Education Indonesia (CCE Indonesia).

Up to the present, CCEI has held training programs, exchanges, and other educational programs. More than 5000 teachers and educators have followed training programs in civic education held by the CCEI. CCEI also has more than 250 alumni from its exchange programs held since 2004.


I. Civic Education Trainings

1. Kami Bangsa Indonesia (KBI)/ We are the People

The model that CCEI uses in its civic education program is simple and successful in many provinces in Indonesia. CCEI which is based in Jakarta is assisted by teams of trainers in many provinces of its programs.

Selected teachers receive three days of intensive training, during which they complete a small-scale student project with other teacher trainees. The student-centered learning methodologies employed by the program create situations in which the teacher becomes the guide, and mentor, and the students take a more active role. Students working on KBI engage in a process where they learn what public policy is, identify a public policy issue that impacts them, and then work step-by-step towards a proposed new policy.

2. Foundations of Democracy

Foundations of Democracy is an innovative civic education strategy for primary school students which discusses basic concept of relationship between students and their families and the government.
In this Foundation of Democracy, CCEI uses three methodologies: Authority, Responsibility, and Justice, in accordance to values that Indonesian people hold. The Authority, Responsibility, and Justice are fun learning materials designed for kids where the students take active parts in the learning.

3. Indonesian Delegation in the International Project Citizen Showcase

More than 250 students from 31 countries gathered in America’s capital from July 15th - 17th 2007 to conduct live demonstrations of a remarkable international civic education program called Project Citizen (in Indonesia: Kami Bangsa Indonesia). This event was the first international event which was held to celebrate the success of Project Citizen Program implementation around the world. Indonesia was represented by eight of its very best students and a civic education teacher from Muhammadiyah 7 Junior High School Yogyakarta. After successfully presenting their project, Indonesian delegation achieved the “Superior Achievement Award”.

II. Exchange Programs

1. Indonesia Youth Leadership Program (IYLP)

IYLP gives students from all across Indonesia a chance to spend a month in the America, meet real American people, share cultures of Indonesia, and learn leadership skills and civic educations. Students are selected from provinces across Indonesia and reflect the diversity that is Indonesia in their ethnic backgrounds, races and religions. The program is held in collaboration with the Legacy International since 2004. The IYLP is sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the U.S. Embassy, Jakarta. This program is still running until now.

2. Linking Individuals, Knowledge and Cultures (LINC): Students Exchange Programs Indonesia – America

LINC is a two-way exchange program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, created specifically so that Indonesian and American teens could meet and learn more about each other, one another’s nations and cultures LINC will promote mutual understanding between the people of Indonesia and the United States. Programmatic activities introduce Indonesian and U.S. students to the principles of civil society and youth leadership as they are practiced in the both countries. In this program, CCEI collaborated with Legacy International.

3. Religion and Society: A Dialogue (RSD)

RSD is a two-year, two-way exchange between religious scholars, clerics, and community leaders of Indonesia and the United States. Fourteen Indonesians and six Americans will travel each year, visiting four distinct regions in each other’s countries, where prestigious institutions will host them. This exchange will provide participating professionals with an opportunity to increase their knowledge of the counterpart country; to establish a dialogue about the scholarship and practice of religion (particularly Islam) in both countries; and to examine the compatibility of religious practice with democratic social and political values.

4. Community Leader Program (CLP)

Heartland International, in partnership with the Center for Civic Education/Indonesia, will implement a three-week educational training program focusing on strengthening private and community-based secondary education in Indonesia. Funded by the U.S. Embassy, this program will complement other Embassy initiatives designed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in primary and junior secondary public and private schools, and promote greater community involvement.

III. Camp Programs

1. Youth Theater Camp, "Promoting Tolerance and Dialogue through Interactive Theater in Eastern Indonesia"

Youth Theater Camp 2009 “Promoting Tolerance and Dialogue through Interactive Theater in Eastern Indonesia Program” was successfully held in Batu, Malang, East Java on June 22 – July 23, 2009. The program was successful in bringing together 100 teenagers from Pasuruan, Poso, Ambon and Lombok to learn theater as a toolbox of promoting tolerance and dialogue. Participants came from conflict areas, most of which are the victims of conflicts. During the 14 days camp program, they involved in activities which are based on theatre methodology for promoting tolerance and dialog. They learned to place themselves in the roles of other people in the conflicts, to find out the causes of conflicts, and to look for the best solutions.

2. English Camp

CCE Indonesia held a week-long camp, focussed on English education and leadership for 42 Indonesian students on September 11-18 2007. As part of the programmatic goals of the camp, as wide as possible cross section of students was sought, reflecting the ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic diversity of Indonesia. The regions where students were recruited from included: Aceh, North Sumatra, Banten, Central Java, East Java, Southeast Sulawesi and Papua. In the program, students would never sit for more than 10 minutes at a time without engaging in some sort of physical activity or movement that forced them to use their already strong English skills.
